5 Typhos

After the truly hellish day, which started by waking with a body-numbing hangover that quickly progressed into the discovery of a murdered child in the city, it was nauseating to hide in the shadows and watch the rest of the Jaran nobility act as if nothing had happened. Of course, thanks to our connections, the news had been kept secret, and it was doubtful any of them knew what had happened.

Still...their flippant attitudes at tonight’s soiree infuriated me. Fuming in the dark doorway, I waited. Waited for her. I’d decided to tell the alpha’s daughter, so that she wouldn’t be surprised at the revelation if one of these dazzling pricks did indeed know about the murder. Now it was simply a matter of catching her. But I needed a moment to breathe after the riotous day, and I was content to lurk in the dark, attempting to give my mind a breath of peace.

Her scent preceded her, and I knew the instant she entered the hall.

Marella looked as though she’d been plucked from the night sky. Shrouded in a royal blue gown that complimented her dark hair, her glittering eyes were twin stars set in her creamy skin.

The throng of females she was walking with brushed past my hiding place. Silly city fae—not checking the alcoves to ensure something dangerous wasn’t lurking to snatch them. It must be nice to have lived in such security where checking for danger wasn’t necessary. But Marella? She should have known better. She was acclimating far too quickly to their ignorance.

“Marella. We need to talk.” My voice shot from the shadows and caused a bevy of shrieks.

“Typhos!” Marella gasped, slapping her palm against her heart.

Although they gave me wary glances, I paid no attention to the other females as I emerged from the deep shadows. I stalked right up to Marella, despite the flash of irritation on her heavily powdered features. Fingers wrapping tightly around my lady’s wrist, I pulled her away from the girls. With a false laugh, she smiled reassuringly at her little group of friends.

“Go on without me!” she called, but I caught the edge in her tone.

“You can cut the bullshit,” I said, not looking down at her as we entered the dark room. Completely alone...at last. The door shut tight behind my back as I leaned heavily against the solid wood.

“Fine.” Her countenance changed instantly, her voice now rough. “What in the hell is going on?”

“Who was out running last night?” I hissed.

My body had been consumed with the effects of alcohol while my mind had been tortured with other matters. And then to wake up to a day straight from hell...fuck. I’d accomplished the unthinkable to keep our people safe. I didn’t much care if I wasn’t being the most delicate about this confrontation.

Marella’s chin tipped up. I knew that defiant look in her eye. I craved it.

She stood a mere handful of paces away. All I had to do was reach out and capture her fingers between mine and pull her in.
